Jerry, I met your dad when I came to Chicago in the mid 80s to work for RWDSU Chicago Joint Board. Syd spent many hours in the union office talking with Nick Jones, president. Soon he befriended me, taking me to lunch at the restaurants frequented by media notables and journalists. I was introduced to Balchowski, playing the piano with one arm, the other I believe he lost in Spain, at the party to celebrate Syd's life after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I have memorable photos he took of me and other comrades at picket lines and protests. I think of Syd often, especially in these times, when his encouragement and steadfastness could help us all. RIP Syd.
